On 23 July 2009 Seacom* launched its undersea fibre-optic network. The 1.28 Terabits per second, 17 000 kilometres, submarine fibre optic cable system allows Africa access to cheap, non-satelite broadband for the first time and links south and east Africa to global networks via India and Europe.
This will enable South Africa to carry out live broadcasts and interactive real-time websites with a one-gigabit-per-second, live, international connection.
