    2010 World Cup rings in changes for South Africa's Internet

    On 23 July 2009 Seacom* launched its undersea fibre-optic network. The 1.28 Terabits per second, 17 000 kilometres, submarine fibre optic cable system allows Africa access to cheap, non-satelite broadband for the first time and links south and east Africa to global networks via India and Europe.

    This will enable South Africa to carry out live broadcasts and interactive real-time websites with a one-gigabit-per-second, live, international connection.

    Google Page Rank – The Basics

    PageRank is a numeric value that represents how important a page is on the web.It matters because it affects a page's ranking in the search results.

    But don't get confused, PageRank does not determine a page's Search Rank and a high PageRank does not guarantee a high Search Rank. It is simply one of many attributes of the ranking algorithm system.

    Googlemaps Street View is here

    On 1 September Google announced that it will begin collecting images in South Africa for its Google Maps Street View feature - a collection of panoramic street-level images that allows users to virtually explore and navigate a neighbourhood -and that it will go live before the 2010 World Cup. Google's street view cars will drive around South Africa with mounted cameras and photograph locations like Johannesburg, Cape Town, Pretoria, Port Elizabeth and Durban. Next, Google will process these thousands of photographs and piece them together - a tricky process that will take several months. Finally, the images will be made available in Street View on Google Maps for South Africa.
